A lifelong equestrian who got her first pony at 4, she was an assistant trail guide for many years in Carmel, CA. She concentrated her formal training in English and Dressage in high school and into adulthood. Unlike many riders, Max likes her horses to be short, slow and smooth! In 1987 moved to Calistoga to open Vintage Paso Fino farm, and ran several state Paso Fino Horse Association Shows. Her forte is working with individuals with special needs achieve the highest level of independence and individual equestrian goals in partnership with their horse.
As an equine Science Instructor in the Agriculture department of Santa Rosa Junior College since 1989, and current Equine Program Coordinator, Maxine has created the only curriculum for Therapeutic Riding offered at a junior college in California. She has taught a full range of Equine Science courses in the department and through the Adapted Physical Education Department taught a Functional Movement course in therapeutic riding for students with disabilities.
Maxine founded Equi-Ed therapeutic riding program in 1993 and has since served as its Program Director and Head Instructor. In a partnership with the JC since 1997, Equi-Ed and Maxine provide the specially trained horses, appropriate tack, adaptive equipment and highly qualified and experienced instruction to provide a safe, fun and challenging equestrian program and meet the individual needs of students with physical, emotional, developmental and cognitive special needs.
